Ewan Miller’s journey in the brass band world is nothing short of remarkable. From picking up his first cornet at age 10 to becoming one of the most decorated players in Scottish banding history, his career is a testament to dedication, passion, and musical excellence.
Born and raised in Paisley, Ewan attended St. Paul’s Primary School, Foxbar, where his musical journey began under the guidance of peripatetic teacher James Colquhoun. By 1974, he had joined the Barrhead Burgh Band, setting the foundation for a lifelong love of brass banding.
At just 13 years old, Ewan competed in his first Scottish Championships (1977), earning second place with the Barrhead Burgh Band and making his first trip to the National Finals in London—a stage he would return to many times.
The Road to the Top
Inspired by the world-class performances of CWS (Glasgow) Band, Ewan set his sights on joining “The Co.” In a defining moment, he passed a rigorous audition and secured a spot in the legendary band, beginning an era that would shape Scottish banding history.
His first major contest with CWS (Glasgow) was the Scottish Championships at Falkirk Town Hall, playing “Essay” in the Championship Section—a sign of bigger achievements to come.
A pivotal shift occurred in 1984 when Howard Snell was appointed Musical Director. Under his leadership, the band soared to new heights.
- 1985 – 2nd place in the Scottish Championships with “Contest Music,” earning Ewan his first performance at The Royal Albert Hall.
- 1987 – The band’s first LP recording, “The 1987 Collection,” and their first international tour to Norway.
- 1988 – Historic Grand Shield victory, making CWS (Glasgow) the first Scottish band to win the competition and earn a spot in The British Open.
- 1989 – European Championships runner-up in Bergen, Norway.
- 1990 – First Scottish band to win the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, performing English Heritage at The Albert Hall under John Hudson.
- 1996 – Second National Championship title, this time under Howard Snell with Isaiah 40.
Unmatched Success in the Scottish Championships
Ewan and The Co dominated the Scottish Championships with 18 victories, including a historic hat-trick of wins:
- 1994 – Partita (Howard Snell)
- 1996 – Sounds (David King)
