BBb Bass

What instrument did you start learning on?
I started playing trombone aged 9, switching to tuba at around 20, as I was playing my sister’s instrument more than mine.

Your first contest was with what band?
First contest was the 1983 Scottish championships (3rd section) on 2nd trombone with Johnstone band.

When did you join the Co?
Joined the Co from Johnstone in 1991 on principal Eb Bass, then got promoted to Bb Bass in 1995.

What is your favourite test piece?
So many great test pieces to choose from but the first piece that got me hooked on bands was Cloudcatcher Fells, (1985 Nationals). It still resonates today.

Your most enjoyable moment in banding?
Ultimate highlight among many contest wins and tours was winning the 1996 Nationals. Saying that some of the best times in banding have been on band buses or ‘socialising’ apres contest. That’s what keeps you going back for more.

Where is your favourite venue for performing?
I have good memories of playing in the Barbican, but there’s something special about Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

What do you dislike about brass bands?
In general, I really don’t appreciate pieces with muted tubas. Its as if composers decide that carrying a tuba is not enough of a logistic nightmare, lets give them something else to cart about, but make sure it’s only needed for a handful of bars!!

If you had to chose a different instrument what would it be?
I’d love to be able to play the drums. Such transferable skills across all musical genres.

Who is your brass band hero?
For being such a pioneer in his approach to conducting, composition and arranging, Howard Snell is the main man for me.
