Alex Ramsay grew up in the Salvation Army in Winton, Bournemouth, where he began playing at the age of five under the guidance of his father, David Ramsay. His early musical development continued with tuition from Bernard Lawson and Steven Cobb. During his formative years, Alex played with both the Young People’s and Senior Bands in Bournemouth and, when old enough, joined the Salvation Army’s Territorial Youth Band.
In 2005, Alex moved to Glasgow to study Engineering, where he was quickly immersed in the contesting scene, making his debut with Kirkintilloch Band at the British Open from the front row. He subsequently joined Kirkintilloch Kelvin Band as Principal Cornet before signing for Co‑operative Funeralcare Band a year later.
With the exception of a brief break in 2021, Alex has been associated with “The Co” for the past 20 years. During this time, he has performed in a wide range of roles, including front row cornet, Principal Cornet, Flugel, and Repiano. His playing career has also seen him represent Scotland in the European Youth Brass Band, and he has appeared in concert alongside leading ensembles such as Brighouse & Rastrick Band and Black Dyke Band.
Outside of band, Alex manages major infrastructure projects and is currently Head of Operations for Balfour Beatty in their power transmission and distribution business.
