the cooperation band is pleased to announce the appointment of accomplished trombonist Helen Douthwaite-Teasdale to the position of 2nd Trombone. Helen brings a rich musical pedigree, extensive banding experience, and a passion for excellence that will be a welcome addition to the band’s low brass section.
Hailing from the North East of England, Helen began her musical career at the age of 9, performing with the Hetton Silver Band and the Houghton Area Youth Band. Her early promise saw her rise through the ranks of regional ensembles and ultimately become Principal Trombone of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.
Helen continued her musical education at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where she completed both her BMus and MMus degrees. Her dedication and talent were recognised with the Robert McCreath Prize in 2012 for the most significant contribution to the brass department.
Throughout her playing career, Helen has performed with leading UK bands including Reg Vardy, Kirkintilloch, Dalmellington, and Kingdom Brass, earning solo accolades such as ‘Best Instrumentalist’ at the Scottish Open Brass Band Championships (2010) and ‘Best Soloist’ at the West Lothian Challenge (2011).
Beyond the contest stage, Helen is deeply involved in music education. In 2012, she co-founded the Gorbals Youth Brass Band, a project dedicated to providing accessible instrumental tuition and musical development for young people in Glasgow. Her versatility as a musician also spans into early music, having been part of the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme and winner of the British Reserve Insurance Prize for Early Music in 2009.
Helen has also held conducting positions with Jayess Newbiggin and Irvine and Dreghorn Bands, leading them to notable successes including appearances at the National Finals and winning SBBA Third Section Band of the Year in 2017.
Principal Conductor Katrina Marzella-Wheeler commented:
“Helen is a fantastic musician whose experience, musicality and collaborative spirit make her an ideal fit for the 2nd Trombone seat. We’re delighted to welcome her to the cooperation band.”
