We are beyond excited to share that Katrina Marzella Wheeler has been nominated for the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award! For over two centuries, the Royal Philharmonic Society has celebrated the power of music in our lives, and Katrina exemplifies this legacy through her trailblazing work in the brass band world.Katrina is passionately breaking down barriers and paving the way for women, non-binary, and underrepresented individuals to thrive in leadership and conducting roles. Her inclusive and progressive vision is reshaping the brass band community, inspiring countless musicians, and driving a more equitable future for all.Throughout 2024, Katrina has led numerous community bands across the UK, including Kingdom Brass in Fife, Glasgow’s The cooperation band and Aldbourne Band Wiltshire. She actively champions commissioning and programming new works by women and underrepresented composers. Recent Scottish premieres include pieces by Liz Lane – Composer, Lucy Pankhurst – Composer , and Kelly-Marie Murphy . Katrina’s innovative projects, such as a brass music theatre collaboration with actor Elizabeth Marzella McNally and the HMS Unicorn 200th-anniversary celebration, have brought music to life for diverse audiences.Beyond the stage, Katrina is deeply committed to nurturing future leaders. She mentors emerging conductors and organises workshops designed to empower women and underrepresented individuals to step into leadership roles. Her recent collaboration with the The Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland and her involvement with Brass Bands England showcase her relentless commitment to creating meaningful change.Katrina has also been nominated for the RPS Inspiration Award, celebrating the remarkable achievements of non-professional musical groups nationwide. Uniquely among the RPS Awards, the recipient of this award is chosen by public vote. Voting is open until 11am on Monday, 3 February 2025. The winner will be announced at the RPS Awards on Thursday, 6 March at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.Let’s celebrate Katrina’s extraordinary impact on music and rally behind her by casting our votes!
